Who Can Use an AED? Essential Safety Tips for Emergencies

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a life-saving device used during sudden cardiac arrest. It analyzes the heart's rhythm and delivers an electric shock when necessary.

AEDs are designed to be easy to use, even for people without medical training. Knowing when and how to use one can make a difference in an emergency.

Who Can Use an AED?

AEDs can be used on people of different ages who are experiencing suspected cardiac arrest.

  • Adults: Standard AED pads can be used.
  • Elderly People: AEDs are safe to use when cardiac arrest is suspected.
  • Children: Pediatric pads or child mode are recommended for children under 8 years old. If unavailable, standard AED pads may be used.
  • Pregnant Women: AEDs can be used during cardiac arrest.
  • People with Pacemakers: AEDs can be used, but pads should not be placed directly over implanted devices.

Important: AEDs should be used when someone is unconscious, unresponsive, and not breathing normally.

How to Use an AED in an Emergency

Follow these five simple steps:

  1. Check and Call for Help: Check responsiveness and breathing. Call emergency services immediately (1669 in Thailand).
  2. Start CPR: Begin chest compressions while waiting for the AED.
  3. Turn On the AED: Follow the voice instructions and attach the electrode pads as shown.
  4. Follow the AED Instructions: Do not touch the patient during rhythm analysis or shock delivery.
  5. Continue CPR: Resume CPR immediately after a shock or when the AED instructs you to do so.

The AED will automatically analyze the heart rhythm and determine whether a shock is needed

Important AED Safety Precautions

Before using an AED, remember these key safety tips:

  • Keep the chest dry: Move the patient out of water and dry the chest before applying pads.
  • Avoid touching the patient: Make sure everyone stands clear during analysis and shock delivery.
  • Check pad placement: Avoid placing pads directly over pacemakers or medication patches.
  • Minimize CPR interruptions: Continue chest compressions whenever the AED allows.

Why Should Every Workplace Have an AED?

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, including offices, schools, factories, hotels, and public spaces.

Having an AED readily available allows bystanders to respond quickly while waiting for emergency medical professionals.

Regular AED maintenance and CPR training also help ensure emergency preparedness.
